The Jeerige Midi Pickle (also known as Jeerige Appe Midi Uppinakayi) is a highly prized, traditional pickle originating from the Malenadu and Western Ghats regions of Karnataka, India. Its distinctive identity stems from the use of a rare, specific variety of tender mango known as Jeerige Midi (or Jeera Midi). This particular mango is small, oblong, and is celebrated for its unique, intense aroma and flavor that remarkably resembles cumin seeds (jeerige or jeera in Kannada), even before pickling. The entire, uncut baby mango (referred to as midi or midiyanga), including a small part of its stalk, is used for pickling, as the seed inside is still soft and undeveloped.
